The first systems of writing were developed in the Middle East but methods were soon adapted to meet the demands of civilizations the world over. Demand for the sweep and grace of a well-written letter is perennially high, but the form is also regarded in some quarters as an exercise in the mathematical relationship between letter, line and space; between ink, implement and paper. Indeed, it may be this dual challenge of balancing the semi-scientific with the aesthetic that has helped this ancient art withstands the advent of printing in the 1450s and, more recently, the unstoppable rise of the computer.
